该话剧起初想法缘于《你在红楼--我在西游》音乐画册中的音乐，其阐述和探讨内容与该戏气质符合。
“音乐专辑戏剧”《你在红楼我在西游》讲述的是一个关于“理想与现实矛盾”的故事，主角是大众熟知的贾宝玉与唐僧。剧中，天真倔强的贾宝玉厌倦了贾府的恶俗习气，向往着《西游记》（看专业剧评）所写的冒险旅程，他请求空空道人将其换作万人景仰的唐僧，穿越时空，走上想象中妙趣横生的取经路。而迂腐执着的唐僧，被莫名其妙地换成了宝玉的模样，来到了几百年后的大观园……
此后，宝玉与悟空白龙马为伴，一路上闹出了不少笑话，他不收猪八戒、沙僧，也拒绝了痴心一片的女儿国国王、却对个性十足的白骨精情有独钟。唐僧则无法去西天取经，绝望地面对溺爱孙子的贾母、教子无方的贾政、醋劲十足的林黛玉，在帮助背负辛酸的秦可卿过程中却陷入了情网。宝玉与唐僧，一个满怀激情享受达成的理想，一个孤立无援面对无奈的现实……该剧编剧阿顺表示，剧情看似荒诞，但生活中每个人都会面临类似情境，如何“选择”，“选择”后是否能达成所愿，正是该剧要阐释的命题。
《你在红楼我在西游》是“靠普剧厂”推出的全新话剧类型“音乐专辑戏剧”开山作品，剧名及创意源于同名音乐画册。该音乐画册集结当下国内顶尖民谣摇滚乐队或歌手（包括二手玫瑰，万晓利，痛苦的信仰，苏阳，与非门等），翻唱11首广为流传的电视剧《西游记》、《红楼梦》插曲主题曲。该剧与“中国最妖娆摇滚乐队”二手玫瑰、中国新民谣领军人物万晓利合作，以他们改编演唱的《枉凝眉》、《何必西天万里遥》、《女儿情》等作为插曲。该剧制作人金秋表示，“音乐专辑戏剧” 意在以话剧形式演绎那些大众耳熟能详的旋律背后的故事和情怀。“有趣有情怀”、“依靠普通观众”正是“靠普剧厂”团队制作话剧的标准，该团队还将、继续推出与知名歌手音乐专辑合作的作品。

宝玉、唐僧换位“选择”

据悉，该剧导演李珊毕业于中央戏剧学院，现为导演系硕士研究生，曾执导过小剧场话剧《爱谁谁，谁爱谁》以及根据百老汇名剧《情圣》改编的《情剩儿》。据李珊介绍，“红楼西游”这部戏荒诞解构了《红楼梦》、《西游记》，使两部原著中人物穿越时空相遇，用后现代的舞台表现形式，赋予了他们更多的现实意义。
王紫瑄、叶项明、付聪、唐夏娃、刘璇等9名青年演员将在剧中挑战甚至颠覆观众印象中固有的20多个名著人物，其中多人将一人饰演多个角色。剧中台词则加入了众多当下“流行语”，如“草泥马”、“躲猫猫”、“集邮”等等，借古喻今。而戏剧结构也安排了取经路与大观园的双线叙事，一条充满欢笑，一条蕴含深情，全剧悲喜交融，期待观众“笑着哭”。

孙悟空：那是驾驶员的位置，他愿意就让他开飞机吧。
八戒：我没驾照，猴哥，还是你来吧。（坐到后椅子上）
孙悟空：这头等舱的坐位是给师傅准备的，你到后边去。
沙僧：（扶唐僧）师傅，您坐好。
唐僧：悟空考虑得真周到。
孙悟空：坐好了，有安全带的系好安全带，没安全带的系好裤腰带。
（飞机摇晃起飞，四人配合摇晃做动作，有条件的加段音乐）
八戒：我怎么感觉飞机在降落呀
沙僧：我有同感
唐僧：悟空，怎么这么快就降落了，到了？
孙悟空：没油了，快看哪有加油站。
八戒：这怎么刚起飞就加油呀？
沙僧：就是，这才刚两分钟
唐僧：悟空，不是师傅说你，你怎么考虑得这么不周到？
孙悟空：师傅，起飞前我刚加过油
八戒：出家人不打妄语，你怎么能骗师傅呢？
沙僧：大师兄，这次真得是你不对！
孙悟空：（急得抓耳挠腮，一把把凳子底下的油箱拉出来，）这不是油箱小嘛，一次只能加五块钱，原来五块还能飞10分钟，现在油又贵了。
唐僧：照这样，得加多少次油呀，我们还不如弃机步行呢。
沙僧：使不得
八戒：换个大油箱不得了。
沙僧：好主意
（那仨人一下子就瞅见猪八戒的大饭盒了。）
悟空：这个好，就是他了。这下好了，这一下子准能加20多块钱呢。（下去）
沙僧：这也好不哪去呀。
唐僧：不要抱怨，要感恩。
沙僧：是，师傅。
（悟空上）师傅，坐稳了，要起飞了。

悟空：那就上飞机吧，八戒，你先别上，帮忙推一下，把飞机头调过来。

（一群小贩上，手里拿着书，光盘。）

四人上，八戒沙僧搀着师傅踉踉跄跄上，小贩呼啦围上来：“师傅，要盘吗？”
“金刚经、楞严经、九阴真经，图文版、视频版、写真版，高压缩、高清晰。”
“一张，顶如来那儿一百张。”
唐僧脸一板：“都给我退下！我们取的是真经。坚决打击盗版。哎！这世道，佛祖的版权费都收不上来。徒弟们，快打听打听，这是哪呀？”
悟空：（指着横副）师傅，我们到西天啦。
唐僧：徒弟们，快走，见如来佛祖去。（下去）
佛祖上，端坐
四人上，见佛祖，双手合十参拜。
（如来看到衣衫褴褛的四人，很是吃惊）：“哪里来的要饭的？”
四人连忙解释：“我们是从东土大唐过来取经的和尚。真对不起，晚了。因为油箱太小。……”
“什么？油箱太小？”（没等四人把话说完，如来佛不高兴了）“不是早就传过去了吗？全套经书连插图录音真人DV都传过去了。邮箱还不够大？”
四人互相看看，很是疑惑。如来指着桌子上的电脑，“这不轻轻一点，所有经书就email过去了吗？你们大唐早用上我的经书了。”

a boy and his tree
a long ago,there was a huge apple tree. a little boy love to come and play around it everyday.he climbed to the tree top,ate the apples,took a nap under the shadow…he loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him.time went by…the little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree everyday.
one day,the boy came back to the tree and he looked.
"come and play with me ,"the tree asked the boy .
"i am no longer a kid, i dont play around trees anymore."the boy replied,
"i want toys.i need money to buy them."
"sorry,but i dont have money…but you can pick all my apples and sell them.
so,you will have money."the boy was so excited .he grabbed all the apples
on the tree and left happily.the boy never came back after he picked the
apples.the tree was sad.
one day,the boy returned and the tree was so excited.
"come and play with me ,"the tree said.
"i dont have time to play.i have to work for my family.we need a house for
shelter.can you help me?"
"sorry,but i dont have a house .but you can chop off my branches to build
your house."so the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left happily.
the tree was glad to see him happy but the boy never came back since then.
the tree was again lonely and sad.
one hot summer day,the boy returned and the tree was delighted.
"come and play with me !"the tree said.
"i am sad and getting old.iwant to go sailing to relax myself.can you give
a boat?"
"use my truck to build your boat.you can sail faraway and be happy."
so the boy cut the tree truck to make a boat .he went sailing and never

一个炎热的夏日，男孩终于回来了，树很欣慰。
“来和我玩吧！”树说。
“我过的不快乐，我也一天天变老了，我想去航海放松一下。你能给我一条船吗？”
“用我的树干造你的船吧，你就能快乐地航行到遥远的地方了。”男孩把树干砍下来，做成了一条船。
他去航海了，很长时间都没露面。
最后，过了很多年，男孩终于回来了。
“对不起，孩子，我再也没有什么东西可以给你了……”树说。
“我已经没有牙咬苹果了。”男孩回答道。
“我也没有树干让你爬了。”树说。
“我已经老得爬不动了。”男孩说。
“我真的不能再给你任何东西了，除了我正在死去的树根。”树含着泪说。
“我现在不需要什么了，只想找个地方休息。过了这么些年，我累了。”男孩回答道。
“太好了！老树根正是休息是最好的倚靠，来吧，来坐在我身边，休息一下吧。” 男孩坐下了，树很高兴，含着泪微笑着……
